<p>
	From U14 Skier Marese Fletcher:</p>
<p>
	The Tyee U14 race program participates in different races, located on different mountains mostly in the Lower Mainland. On the second weekend of January, Whistler Mountain hosted a U14 race with 1 day of Giant Slalom and 1 day of Slalom courses. Each of those categories consist of different measurements between gates to make your turn shape smaller or larger.</p>
<p>
	We start by inspecting the course. An inspection is when you go with your teammates and coaches to slip the course and try to remember the key components to it. Sometimes while slipping you catch your ski and topple over - great start to the day, am I right?!</p>
<p>
	This brings us to the fun part, Racing! It’s always so nerve racking for me when I am approaching the start gate. I always try to take deep breaths; my teammates say it helps. Who am I kidding, it’s a lie. That deep breath ritual never works. Instead, I use my nervousness to fuel myself and give me that extra kick of adrenalin.</p>
<p>
	You are focused on the course, however you can’t help but hear your teammates and coaches cheering you on from the side lines. You feel wind on your face as you tear through the course full of hairpins, flushes, delays and simple corridors. Then when the finish line comes into view you immediately push as hard as you can to go faster and get a good time. The feeling of accomplishment surges over you as you cross that line.</p>
<p>
	At the end of the race, awards are held. You always want to hear your name being called out, and even if you don’t place, you are always so happy to see one of your fellow racers from Grouse Mountain Tyee step up onto the podium. The U14 Whistler race was a great way to start the season.</p>

<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
	&nbsp;</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
	The U12 Athlete of the Month for December is Kai Taylor Nunes.</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
	&nbsp;</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
	U12 Head Coach Coach Tamara says that "Kai embodies AoM in several ways: He is always on the hill unless he is sick, he listens to coaches and asks questions and he knows lots of ski racer names."</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
	&nbsp;</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
	Coach Tamara also tells us that Kai is very quick to help out teammates.&nbsp; One amazing example she shared is when he helped a U8 athlete carry their skis to the tram.&nbsp; He was late for the U12 tram load as a result but Tamara gave him a pass when he shared his reason.&nbsp; Way to go Kai. As Mike Janyk would say, that's a homie move.&nbsp;</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
	&nbsp;</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
	Kai knew he wanted to be a ski racer the first time he saw the Tyee kids training on Grouse.&nbsp; His other passion is mountain biking on the local mountains and in the bike park in Whistler.&nbsp; The great outdoors is what makes Kai happiest.&nbsp; One thing he doesn't like is pollution.</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
	&nbsp;</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
	Congratulations Kai.&nbsp; Have a great season.</div>

<p>
	The worst day of the season was fortunately followed by one of the best as the sun came out in time for the Tyee Club Race.&nbsp; The Centennial Dual course was perfectly firm and as Gogi and Nesho were saying heavily liquid infused after Saturday’s rainstorm.</p>
<p>
	The Club Race is the perfect way to welcome new members and reconnect with old friends.&nbsp; Aside from the parent social upstairs in the cabin the highlights included Coach Andrew sliding down the course on his butt to encourage one of his young athletes and watching our superstar Program Director Mike Janyk effortlessly blaze through the gates like he was still on the World Cup circuit.</p>
<p>
	The season is now in full flight.&nbsp; The older kids are travelling to races and the younger ones are getting into their groups and training on Grouse Mountain.&nbsp; Here’s to more snow, good health and a great year of skiing.</p>

<p>
	You might have seen Sam Mulligan on TV recently racing against Marcel Hirscher and the best skiers in the world.&nbsp; Sam is one of us, A Tyee skier who grew up on Grouse Mountain. He's now just steps away from the top rungs of ski racing and he needs our help to get there.</p>
<p>
	Here's a short letter to us from his family asking for our help:</p>
<blockquote style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;" type="cite">
	"I am writing on behalf of the ‘Europa Cup Men’s speed team. As you know, Sam is part of the group who are our next generation of World Cup racers. This season is actually grossly underfunded for these young men by $100k. We as a group of athletes and parents are working to meet this shortfall. There are two ways we have been approaching. First, our families have contacted people we know asking them to direct a donation to this program on the Alpine Canada site. It is very important to specify “Europa cup team" in the comment section in order that the funds go to the team and the donor gets a tax receipt.&nbsp;<span style="font-family: Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">Also, we are planning a fun fundraiser on Dec 27 at Whistler."(See the attached poster for details)</span></blockquote>
<blockquote style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;" type="cite">
	<span style="font-family: Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">"</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">It would mean a lot to Sam and our family (if you could help). He would be appealing himself but it is race season and pretty hard to do both."</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">&nbsp;</span></blockquote>
<blockquote style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;" type="cite">
	Anything we as Tyee families can do to help I'm sure would be greatly appreciated.&nbsp; Go Sam!</blockquote>

	As the ski season gets closer dryland activities are ramping up.&nbsp; Weeknight training has moved inside to get out of the dark and rain even though the rain has been sparse most nights.&nbsp; That brings me to the mudless mud run.&nbsp; What a day to be out on the trails.&nbsp; The times were great and the parent volunteers stayed dry.&nbsp; The mud run is a cross-country course with obstacles, cones and gates in the park through the bushes with sharp corners.&nbsp; That's how Tamara describes the set up. This year’s course was behind the Aquarium in Stanley Park under the sun.</p>
