Tyee's new Olympian - Georgia Simmerling (Racing)

This is a very proud moment for the Grouse Mountain Tyee Ski Club. Georgia Simmerling of North Vancouver/Grouse Tyee has been named to the Canada Olympic team for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games. The announcement came out yesterday after Canada was granted a full host nation olympic quota. At 20 years old, this is quite an achievement and we are all very proud of her. The Olympic dream is one of personal excellence and perseverence.

Events such as the Olympics and World Championships are "peak" ski racing events that do not occur as often as regular World Cup races. As such, they require preparation and extensive experience to triumph at. Georgia's olympic selection at 20 years old is not only a great opportunity for 2010, but an awesome setup for 2014 and 2018 winter games.

A little background on Georgia...
She grew up in North Vancouver as a regular active kid. Georigia participated in many sports; ski racing and soccer being her favorite. Many of our current Tyee coaches had the opportunity to work with her on and off snow. The coaches report that her athletic ability and work ethic got her where she is right now. Although Georgia had to work very hard on her technical skills all the way to the national team, she was good at seeking speed down a course and always tuned her skis to perfection. Georgia's positive attitude and perseverence got her through many injuries. In other words, she was a typical Tyee kid that did everything she can to improve factors within her control. Nowadays Georgia stays involved with the Tyee club by coaching our kids at the spring camps and summer/fall drylands.

We're all very proud of her and hope she has a great 2010 World Cup and Olympic debut season.

For any parents or kids that are Facebook users, Georgia Simmerling's Grouse Tyee support group has been set up here: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=321419649895&ref=mf

Please join the group and show your support. Feel free to post questions and pictures of/for Georgia.

K2 Parsons SuperG Update (Racing)

Hello K2 parents/athletes:

Once again the Parson's Super G at Whistler did not disappoint. Despite missing Friday training for avalanche hazards the 2 race days Sat/Sun were a huge success. With the help of the many volunteers from all the participating clubs, Saturday and Sunday's events were a success. The plan was to run 2 SG's on Saturday for both men/women, but due to the accumulation of 70 cm's of snow it took all morning to prep the race course for Saturday and 1 run was all they could get in. The Sunday race ran very smoothly as well with just the 1 run for each male/female.

Grouse Tyee had some great results with Saturday in the women's division Alysia Kwong, Emma MacNaught, and 1st yr. K2 Madison Brainard rounding out the top 20 and Tori Smallwood just missing the top 20 by finishing 21st. Well done girls!

The men's division saw Austin Llewellyn in 4th just missing the podium, 1st year K2 Will Walton in 10th, Ryan Patience 11th, Rory Thies 13th, Phil Basaric 15th, and 1st yr. K2's Paul Cotton 16th, and Max Manning just missing the top 20 with a respectable 22nd place finish.

Sunday was just as successful: Alysia Kwong just missing top 10 with an 11th place finish, Madison Brainard with 20th, Emma MacNaught 21st and 1st yr. k2 Tara Stipec with a big improvement from Saturday moving into 22nd. Well done.
The mens division: Austin Llewellyn 4th, Rory Thies 9th, Will Walton 12th, Ryan Patience 13th, Paul Cotton 14th all top 15 and Phil Basaric in 18th, Olivier Mercier 22nd, Max Manning 23rd, & newcomer Aiko Kato 24th, great job to all who competed and finished on the weekend their very first Super G. Congratulations! Ryan Matheson gave us some great spectator entertainment on Sunday with a spectacular wipeout caught on video by Russell Patience, I am sure Ryan you will want to take a peek at that video. For all Race Results go to:
http://www.bcalpine.com/calendar/event/?event=1171&cal=1

Of course we could not have done all of this without the tireless support of our 3 chaperons Marie-France, Michael Noc and Scott Boyd!! Thank you Thank you Thank you

Thank you to our coaches we appreciate your dedication and support of our children on and off the hill!! I hope all of you were able to meet and ski with our new guest coach Fred from France

Thank you to Gordon Kwong and Jim Davie who will have some spectacular for us to see!!

As you are aware or maybe not, but unfortunately Seymour Enquist has been canceled For those of you who have paid we will keep your payment as a credit in the racer account. If you absolutely require your money refunded please respond to me and I will have Julie Thies cut you a check.

Stay tuned for training updates from Matt Roth and as a club we will have to be flexible in regards to the lack of snow and we will do our best to stay in town for training or alternately dry-land but there could be some Whistler training in the coming weeks if the snow conditions do not improve at Grouse.

Have a great week and remember Panorama Registration is NOW OPEN!!!

I think I covered everything, if I missed anything or you have a comment please contact me @
k2.admin@grousetyee.com

Kind regards,
Teck K1 SL Cancelled (Racing)

I'm sorry to inform everyone that I have had to cancel our Tyee Tech K1 Sl scheduled for next weekend (January 30th &31st.) Despite a huge effort from Grouse Mountain Resorts, who have done an unbelievable job maintaining the little snow that they have been given, with the rain and high freezing levels in the forecast this week, there will not be enough coverage to run a proper race.

I would like to thank all the people who stepped up and volunteered for the race. I would also like to ask all families to thank the members of the ROC who have been working for several months to prepare for this event.

I hope to see many of you at our next event, the second annual "Tyee Cup" on the weekend of March 6th & 7th.

http://www.skiisandbiikes.com/

In addition the discount for the Athletes in the stores is as follows:

Nancy Greene level skis and boots - reg street pricing, but they can use the half back program
2009/2010 Grouse Tyee Contact Info (General)

Hi Tyees,

As our club numbers grow, the need for better management and communication grows stronger. Over the past few years, we've been building up our board of directors, committees, parent coordinators and coaching staff to a higher level of organization.

In this message, we are publishing an excerpt of our Club Handbook (currently undergoing a major revision) that contains all the major contact information for the club. Have a good look as it also identifies what the committee roles are. With over 140 family members in the club, it is imperative that we communicate effectively and direct the inquiries to the right people. Here are a couple points to kick this off:

In person and over the telephone is still the preferred way to communicate and should be done whenever possible.

If emailing, do your best to contact the correct person so you can get the best and most timely information.

Keep in mind that club directors, coordinators and coaching staff contribute their personal time to the sport and club.

Coaches should be addressed about specific programming and technical information.

All other inquiries should be filtered through the parent coordinator to lessen the coaches off-snow club obligations.

Please do your best to follow the updates on the website on a weekly and raceline on a daily basis.

If it's a sensitive issue you would like to bring up, please give 24 hrs and avoid email.

Thanks very much...looking to a productive and snow filled ski season.

Basic Steps for Effective Ski Tuning (General)

Basic Steps for Effective Ski Tuning & Flowchart

Please take time to review these basic steps for ski tuning. It is necessary to tune skis especially for icy conditions and race preparation. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your head coach.

For the K1/K2 athletes, there will be ski tuning clinics to review these steps as they should know how to tune/wax their own skis. Stay "TUNED" for date and time.
