Hemlock NGSL Race (Racing)

On Saturday February 4^th, 2012 race at Hemlock took place. Number of NGSL, Mountain Star and Kstars came to compete and have fun. Weather was perfect and race was very well organized. Thank you Hemlock Ski Club!

“Grouse showed up with 46 athletes at Hemlock, which was about half of all entries. There were about 100 racers on the hill and with only two events everything went very smoothly. We even got to ski all the other runs, which doesn't happen at every race. The race was well organized and everybody seemed to be very relaxed. Congratulations to all medal winners - we had quite a few of them (see results). One of our Kstar racers even had the fastest time of the day, beating also the K1 forerunners... Not everybody can win but I think everybody gave their best and enjoyed the racing and skiing - despite having had to get up early - and we could see big improvements technically and tactically compared to the E2 race at Whistler. Way to go Kstars!” said Kstar coach Tamara.

NGSL coach Scott had following to say: “The weather was fantastic. I think we all came away with tanned faces on top of the medals. It was warm and the snow softened up a bit in the afternoon but we still had speeds in the mid 50s for most of the NGSL'ers. The Hemlock club did a great job organizing the race. We were done racing by noon then skied some of their steeper terrain after lunch while we waited for the awards. We had a number of Grouse sweeps on the podium but it was good to see Seymour and Hemlock put a number of their kids up there too. Definitely worth the trip.”

February 2012- Two Years On and the Spirit of Sport Lives Strong

On Feb 11, Grouse Mountain will stoke the fire that captured the world’s attention in 2010. We are pleased to announce the return of 24 Hours of Winter, the ground-breaking initiative that brought alpine sports and leisure to the city around-the-clock during the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games.

And we want you to be part of it. In addition to an exciting calendar of events that will unfold over the course of more than 36 consecutive hours beginning February 11^th, Grouse Mountain is bringing back the stunningly visual Torch Light Parade that lit the city skyline last year.

That’s where you come in. We need torch bearers to ski or ride with us, creating a glowing procession that can be seen throughout the Lower Mainland. Be part of a proud tradition that Grouse Mountain will pursue every February as part of our legacy celebration.

All participants must ski or board at an advanced level as we will be riding down the Peak. Participants must also be at least 12 years of age.

As for the rest of 24 Hours of Winter, mark your calendar because February 11^th is a date you don’t want to miss. From youth hockey on the ice pond to midnight rail jams in the Quiksilver Park, from extended hours and a big party in Altitudes Bistro to sunrise snowshoe hikes, there will be something memorable to participate in every minute of 24 Hours of Winter. Stay tuned for a full calendar of events.

5th Annual VASS CUP AT GROUSE MOUNTAIN on March 8, 2012

On March 8th, VASS will be holding the 5th annual VASS CUP. All VASS skiers, Tyee members, and their friends and families are invited to sign up and participate.

Come out for a fantastic day on Grouse Mountain that will include the zip-trek, sledge hockey and access to the Eye of the Wind, a gourmet banquet lunch, prizes - and of course, the VASS Cup Fun Race.

You can register as an individual racer and you'll be assigned to a team - or you can sign up with a team you create. Those want to participate without racing can also sign up as a non-racer.

This is the major annual fundraiser for VASS and it is a critical part of generating the money that keeps VASS operating each year. We need everyone at VASS to come and be part of the event and to gather sponsorship pledges to help VASS serve our skiers. All Tyees are most welcome too!

Every $500 raised gives a skier or snowboarder with disabilities the opportunity to participate in VASS's programs.

Sign up today, start raising pledges and help us reach our goal of making the mountain accessible to100 skiers and snowboarders with disabilities!

If you can't participate either as a racer or a non-racer, maybe you could support another participants via a pledge.

Training Arena Setup Clinic (Training)

Training Arena Setup Clinic

Jan 29, 2012 - 8am at Tyee Cabin

As you may have already figured out, training space and lift lines can be at a premium at any mountain resort.

At Grouse Tyee, we try to capitalize on our early morning conditions, short lift lineups and hillspace availability.

The coaches aim to be out on the runs setting up the training courses at 8am, and need to focus on the training objectives and spend as much time interacting with the kids. Because of this, we absolutely need club parents to pitch in and take charge of setting up the surrounding safety, eg ropelines, road crossings and the appropriate signage and fencing.

During training, we need to guard the public crossings. As the racers train, they rut up the course so slippers are always welcome. It is important to know what is effective course slipping.

When the training session is done, we also need help tearing down this equipment and putting it away in the cabin basement.

For those that are familiar with setting courses, the coaches welcome help with carrying gates and other training apparatus. For this you shoudl be comfortable moving around with equipment at a brisk pace as the coaches hurry to set things up. However, remember that the course-setting and training lead is entirely the coaches job, so it is best to leave all aspects to do with the racers up to the pros.

On any given training day, we need a minimum of 5 volunteers for the setup, but more is merrier.

Join Sead, the Tyee Program Director and Bob Walton, the Tyee Race Organizer on Sunday Jan 29th for a clinic on setting up, maintaining and tearing down a training arena. You'll learn what, how, where and when for the logistics of the operation.

This skillset will be transferrable for any setup of a race or any given training day on Grouse. The goal is to have as many knowledgeable people in our club as possible, so anyone can jump in on any given day and take charge.

Grouse Tyee's New Van! (General)

Dear Tyee members,

We are proud to announce that for the first time ever, Grouse Mtn Tyee Ski Club has a team van!

Some years back we realized there is a case for using our own vehicle, both from a safety and cost perspective.

This purchase was made possible by a donation from our alumni members Carol and Randy Smallwood. (You may also remember that their company Silver Wheaton used to sponsor the club for a number of years.)

Apart from the van purchase, the Smallwood's donation helped us establish our bursary program.

Our KStar coach and parent Dallas Matson spent a number of months this fall researching and shopping for the right vehicle. It is a tour-style van that seats 21-25 plus luggage and will be used to transport our older racers (K2-VST) to away camps and races. When schedule allows, it can also be used for K1 and coach transport to away events.

All the required safety, maintenance, mechanical work and inspections have been performed and the required permits are in place so we will begin using it with the VST and K2 for their Apex trips immediately.

Any commercial vehicle with over 10 seats has to fall under the rules and regulations of the National Safety Code and Passenger Transportation Act. We have developed an operational plan that addresses aspects of safety, maintenance and hours of use.

Moving forward, the objectives and advantages of this team van are:

Affordability (costs of ownership plus running expenses)
Improved Safety (load rating, multiple drivers sharing hours, highway stability)
Flexibility of use (improved availability)
Visibility (Club & Team image and sponsor platform)

We are working with Grouse Mountain's design team to plan out a graphic layout that represents our club and it's vision/mission and core values. Apart from pictures, our club and mountain logos will be very visible, as well as all the club sponsors. Not only does this bring great value to our sponsorship program, but it will be a good recruitment tool.

This is where we would like your input! We are asking our membership to submit pictures that represent our club and what it stands for. Any interesting ideas for overall design are welcome and the best submission that ends up on the bus graphics will win a gift certificate to Skiis and Biikes!

Teck K1 Juvenile Race Recap - Mt. Washington - January 13-15, 2012

Perfect conditions are a rarity in ski racing, but the Grouse Mountain Tyees who participated in the K1 zone race at Mt. Washington last month got a little taste of it. Four days of sunshine and cold enough temperatures for the snow to hold up made for pretty ideal racing conditions.

Judging by the accounts of those who were there, the kids did really well. They worked through a grueling schedule, dealt with injuries and put in a great effort at each and every race, leading to podium finishes for some and personal growth for all.

“This trip was great. I definitely have a better understanding of how hard those kids work and how self-reliant they are. It’s amazing how independent our kids are when we’re not around!” That came from Mimi, one of the chaperones.

K1 head coach Gord seemed just as pleased with his crew.

“All the athletes have represented Grouse in an excellent fashion, both on and off the hill. I would also like to thank all of the chaperons from Mt. Washington who helped make the event such a success,” he said.

Teck Seymour Enquist SL Race Recap - Jan. 21 & 22, 2012

Gale force winds on Mt. Seymour this past weekend didn’t prevent our Grouse Mountain Tyee
K2 and J1 (VST) racers from attending the 76th Annual Enquist Slalom race.

They toughed it out over the two-day event and fought their way to some great finishes,
including Paul Cotton winning the overall trophy for the males, Antonia Wearmouth’s K2 win on
Saturday, Sam Mulligan's K2 wins Saturday and Sunday, Sarah Ussher's most improved K2 on Sunday, and a Tyee sweep from the J1/VST boys on both days.

Those K2s won’t have much time to rest on their laurels. Next month, they’ll be off to the
Teck U16 Provincials at Apex.

K1s off to the BC Winter Games (Racing)

BC Winter Games, Greater Vernon, Feb 2012

From February the 23rd to the 26th, approximately 2000 athletes, coaches and officials from all regions of the province will converge on Greater Vernon for the BC Winter Games.

The BC Games are held every second year in even calendar years. The purpose of the Games is to provide an opportunity, in a multi-sport event, for the development of athletes, coaches, and officials in preparation for higher levels of competition.

Since the first Games in Penticton in 1978 more than 150,000 young BC athletes have participated.

The Winter Games include 15 sports:

Alpine Skiing (incl. Para)	Curling	Judo
Archery	Figure Skating	Karate
Badminton	Freestyle Skiing	Netball
Biathalon	Gymnastics	Ringette
Cross Country Skiing (incl. Para)	Hockey	Speed Skating

Now, some ski racers may consider archery and badminton as summer pastimes, but the BC Summer Games already include 21 sports and almost 4000 participants. In July 2012 Surrey will host the Summer Games.

Two of the goals of the Games are to build community and to include athletes from every area of the province. To that end, qualification is by a rather complicated formula including competition results and home zone.

Whistler Blackcomb Ski and Snowboard Cross under 13 (Racing)

Grouse Tyee was well represented at Whistler Blackcomb Ski and Snowboard Cross under 13 from January 21st to January 22nd, 2012. The Whistler Blackcomb Ski and Snowboard Cross event is recreational competition open to all ages. Amateur skiers and boarders competed in different age and discipline divisions on the Nintendo Terrain Park Snowcross course.

It was a tricky ride from Vancouver to Whistler early morning on Saturday and a bit of a delay getting to the top of the course due to Blackcomb Excalibur Gondola not running but racers and coaches made it.

This was the fun event with lots of Tyees on the podium (click for the results). On Saturday there was the training and also the timed run in bib order to determine the placements in heats and on Sunday there was a race. Video and awards were at 18 Below (Base II) and lots of swag was given out.

Congratulations Marisa and Max!

Marisa Ruus (10 years old)

Marisa is extremely passionate about swimming, waterpolo, and skiing. She loves to play in water - both frozen and liquid form. She also enjoys playing the piano and dancing. Marisa is very gregarious, creative and capable. She is hard-working, focused and organized. She is in French Immersion - her favourite subject is mathematics. She enjoys playing with her sister and 2 brothers and she loves all animals. Her favourite color is aqua blue. Her outstanding perseverance and can do spirit made her win the Speed Event at the race in Whistler.

Maximilian Wiesinger (10 years old)

Max enjoys building and designing with lego, reading and learning about history, and participating in sports such as track and field, basketball, and volleyball. In K-star, Max likes to free ski and go off lots of jumps and have fun with his friends. Max is interested in learning about new things, and he likes really good chocolate!
His coach says that Max is hard working, has strong focus and willingness to learn.

Each month, one girl and one boy are selected as the KStar Athletes of the Month. The criteria are:

Hosted by Whistler Mountain Ski Club first Nancy Greene Ski League Festival of the year in BC took place on Saturday January 7th, 2012. On Gandy Dancer E2 skills were tested. Number of Grouse racers participated at the festival and had fun. Some even got medals! Let the pictures talk about the day - there was warm-up first, followed by course inspection, race and then cheering crowds and medals.

True to the spirit and philosophy behind the Nancy Greene Ski League, the goals for this festival were to encourage participation, interaction and development of technical skills in an exciting and motivating atmosphere without the pressures of intense competition. Skills covered were: Speed Trap, Mogul GS, Super Slalom, Spiess & Skating circuit.

Thank you volunteers (some Tyee parents were among them) and WMSC for the well organized event.

2011-12 Corporate Sponsorship Update (Fundraising)

Dear Tyee Members

Please read the 2011-12 Corporate Sponsorship Newsletter outlining the club sponsors and the relation of the sponsors to the club. While the primary objective of the sponsors is to support the club, please support them in turn where you can use their services or purchase their products.

In addition to the Sponsorship Program this year, we have set up our 1st own Grouse Mountain Tyee Ski Club Raffle to raise funds for the club. Each family has or in the case of the new families will receive a book of raffle tickets that were paid for as part of your membership. However to further increase our fund raising, we are asking K-1, K-2 and VST families to purchase another book of tickets on the Tyee web site. You can do that here. The goal is that the ski racers themselves will go and sell the tickets and give their parents back the money. We want our older racers to have some connection to the fund raising the club goes through.

Raffle ticket book stubs can be placed in the mail box in the Tyee Cabin. The draw will be held on March 10 and we will sell extra books until mid-Feb. Finally for all families that purchase an extra book of tickets, a single raffle will also be held for a pizza party for 10 that has been generously provided by Silver Sponsor, Boston Pizza.

VASS, which is affiliated with the Tyee Ski Club on Grouse Mountain (Didn’t know that? Expecting the Best (Training)

Hello Tyees,

What a night on the 3rd - rain but really good training - almost pristine slopes, no line-ups, lots of runs in the stubbies, the slope held up reall well and some technical session indoors. So don't be afraid of the weather at the bottom, it is almost always better on the hill. A poncho or garbage bag helps (if you haven't got one respond to apparel@grousetyee.com where there are some junior ones for sale)

Roy was talking to the base operator last night after skiing and was told that had it not been for Tyee the mountain would have closed late afternoon, but because they knew we were skiing they kept it open. So we should feel very priveledged to be skiing there.

With a view to the (E2) race on Saturday and for everybody else as well, a comment by Dr. Jim Taylor about the attitude towards success and failure. Let's keep this in mind for races and training:

I define success as giving your best effort, skiing to the best of your ability, and having fun. I define failure as not trying your hardest, skiing poorly, and not having a good time. The irony is that if you have this attitude and don't worry too much about success and failure, you'll feel less pressure, you'll ski better, and as a result, you'll be more likely to achieve your goals and enjoy the experience.

KStar Sleepover (Social)

In the morning of December 20^th, 2011, KStar girls packed not only their skis, but also their sleeping bags and PJ’s for the trip up to the mountain. They were going to stay there for the night. It was the first sleepover of the season and it was a great night – clear skies and lots of stars. The day started with regular training and then the racers had snack, did some free skiing and played outside. They built a very fancy snow fort that included the sofa that can fit them all and also a fireplace. After spaghetti dinner they went back outside and played the traditional sleepover game called “hide and seek in the dark”. The basic rule is that they split in pairs and hide inside the set boundaries. Before bed they had another snack - cookies and hot chocolate, then the teeth were brushed and the sleeping bag time was around 9pm. In the morning alarm went off at 7am and after breakfast the girls met the rest of the team for regular training.

The KStar boys had their turn to stay the night at the cabin on Wednesday the 28^th of December. The sky was not as clear as the week before but they had fun watching the ski videos on the big screen at the cabin. I’ve heard there was also special screening of the movie Transformers. They had a very special homemade pasta sauce and homemade cookies – some even asked for a recipe.

Whistler Teck Juvenile GS/SL Race - December 17 & 18, 2011

The Grouse Mountain Tyee coaching team couldn’t have picked a better event to wake their athletes up early in the season than the Teck K2/K1 race that Whistler Mountain hosted this past December 17 & 18. Tyees had to deal with fog,”funky” snow conditions and some stiff competition from the usual rivals that day, and they showed some resilience.

Safety Message from Grouse Mountain & Tyee (General)

IMPORTANT SAFETY MESSAGE

This is a special safety bulletin directed to all Tyee members including racers, parents and coaches.

We're entering the busiest 30 day period on Grouse Mountain as all Y2Players are coming up to ski at the Peak of Vancouver. In addition, it's school break so local and tourist families are enrolling in the Ski School programs. This means that the slopes will be getting very crowded starting late morning.

Being a separate, non-profit organization from the mountain, we rely heavily on Grouse Mountain's support in order to run our programs. We are very visible on the ski hill because of our skiing ability and our awesome team jackets. This partnership, our visibility and skiing expertise makes us the Grouse Mountain ambassadors and with that come responsibilities.

Below are some important points related to Tyee operations on Grouse Mountain:

All Tyees should load the tram prior to 8am. We have staggered loading times for all groups. If you miss the pre-8am times, you need to load up through the regular public lineup. The kids and coaches will head over to the Paradise/Greenway area and do their morning warmup. The rest of the mountain is not open until 8:30 so no skiing is permitted on any other run. Even if you see public heading down Expo or the Cut, please educate them there are ski patrollers and snow vehicles on the run and it's a safety hazard. Please resist the urge to have that run before 8:30. Come over to the cabin to meet and greet with other members and have a coffee till the mtn is officially open. The only exception to the 8:30 rule are coaches and course setup crews and this is by special mtn permission and precaution only.

When you see that the mountain is getting busy, please adjust your speed and turn size to match the masses. At busy holiday times, it's a good time to work on your technical proficiency in short turns. Focus on control and precision rather than speed.

Obey slow and caution signage. Resist the temptation to jump that roll if it's in a slow or caution area or if it is blind. For the kids, remember that the peak roll that we all love to pop is right above the ski patrol hut.

Be patient and courteous with the mountain staff. They are all here to make our skiing privilege as enjoyable as possible and work hard at their jobs.

Ski and speed patrol is at the peak of their awareness during the holidays and they have the right to sanction skiers that compromise safety. The current going rate is a 2 week pass suspension for all passholders (racers, coaches and parents inclusive). The club encourages these sanctions and will not contest any of their decisions.

Safety is #1.

During the busy periods, we will be adjusting the content of our afternoon training sessions. We'll need to stay out of the busy ski areas and focus on some other aspects of development (eg agility, coordination, teambuilding, games, ski tuning, mental training, etc)

Sun Peaks Performance Camp was Nov 25-28 (Training)

Last weekend, November 25th to 28th, the traditional Tyee Performance Camp at Sun Peaks took place. It started on Friday with clear blue skies, followed by typical fall weather in the mountains on Saturday and Sunday. Monday ended for the K1s and K2s with fresh snow and some blue sky peeking out.

In words of KStar head coach Tamara Sun peaks was “Fun, fun, fun, mileage, mileage, mileage. “ There were 19 kids on the weekend and about 12 on Friday. Skills covered were: basic balance, spatial orientation (a more professional way of saying jumping), getting to know each other as a team, and getting into the groove.

Here is also an update on the K2 Team that went to Sun Peaks from their head coach Warren: “What a great weekend at Sun Peaks! This world class training facility set a great atmosphere to kick off the season. With teams like the Austrian Womens Ski Team and the BC Mens Ski Team there, the kids were on the hill with some of the best athletes in the world. We stopped and watched some Super G, both the Austrian Women and BC Men were flying. It's such a rare and unique opportunity to see these world class athletes right before the start of their competitive season.

Stance and Balance were the focus of our weekend up at Sun Peaks, 1 day of slalom and 3 days of GS, we got a lot of great work accomplished. The highlight of the trip had to be our skit night. Each group of 3 presented on one discipline, SL, GS, SG, DH and Ski Cross, they have amazing creativity as a group - stay tuned for videos to come. I think we set a good tone for the rest of the season, hard work and focus (with some fun mixed in), I think I can speak for everyone when I say we are very excited for the upcoming season. Our thanks goes out to Johnny Crichton and the Sun Peaks Ski Club for hosting us and providing us with such awesome training space.”
