"Be sure to check in with yourself and think about the reasons why you started something when you have a bad day. That will refocus you and bring you a renewed sense of purpose."

To get to know Tamara, the U12 Head Coach, our team decided to do a Q&A!

Years of coaching experience?

26

Favourite run at Grouse Mountain?

Cut (early morning) and Dry Corduroy

Favourite breakfast?

Eggs Benedict

Best mountain/place you've gone skiing?

Gastein Valley, Austria

What brought you to coach within the alpine ski racing community?

Needed to earn some money during my university career.

What does an ideal ski day look like for you?

Sunshine, of course, dry cold snow conditions, be first on the hill, ski hard until after noonish, get a Knoedel soup and Manner Schnitten (when in Austria), and go to the sauna afterwards.

If you could switch coaching roles for one day with any other Tyee coach, who would you switch with?

U16 - it would be great to see how kids I coached improved over the years

What’s your session goal for athletes when dealing with a heavy weather and dense training day?

That varies depending on which part of the season it is. When it is early season we go indoors and do our goal setting, equipment care, etc. Later in the season we learn about perseverance and find out what can be accomplished even in bad weather and conditions.

If you could give only one piece of advice to your athletes for the rest of your coaching career, what would tell them?

Be sure to check in with yourself and think about the reasons why you started something when you have a bad day. That will refocus you and bring you a renewed sense of purpose.

Highlight of your coaching career?

Seeing how the community (parents and kids) came together and supported me when I hurt myself. This showed me that we as coaches are part of something bigger than just teaching kids how to become a better skier and racer.

Describe Grouse Tyee in one word.

Community.

What do you look forward to most this season?

Cold weather - supposedly it is going to be cold - and the beautiful mornings with sunshine
