For the second part of the provincial-wide Teck Open race series, the Tyee U16s headed off to Sun Peaks! The race was six days long, with two days each of Super-G, GS, and SL.

This was the first Super-G race the team had ever done. On the first day, it was exciting but also strange, since we weren’t very familiar with the long length of the skis or the rhythm of the course just yet, but everyone grew more comfortable and confident by the second day. The U16s were grateful for the exposure to a true speed event, and there were many who were leaving Sun Peaks with this as their new favourite discipline.

The rest of the race was just as exciting. Over the next four days of GS and SL racing, the U16s enjoyed the stunning bluebird skies and perfect racing conditions. Once again, we had many solid finishes in the top 30, and even a few of ribbons and medals. We even had qualifiers for Nationals, which will take place later this month in Quebec: Thomas Hung and Brooke Irish. Congratulations; all the Birdfishes will be sure to cheer you on from home!

And for everyone else, there were unquestionably tangible improvements made throughout the week. Each athlete was able to leave knowing that they found their own definition of success; and that was what truly made this trip an exceptional one.
