Dates: March 9th and 10th 2024
Location: Whistler Mountain
Hill & Weather Conditions: Day one, heavy snowfall with strong winds, powder day! Day two, continued heavy snowfall with lighter winds. Challenging conditions to race in with so much snow.
Race Structure: Day one, due to heavy snowfall we ran one run of GS and cancelled the Kombi. Day two, we had Stubbie Slalom in the morning and Tall Gates Slalom in the afternoon.
On March 9 and 10, 2024, Grouse Tyee Ski Club and Whistler Mountain Ski Club co-hosted the U12 Tyee Cup. Usually held at Grouse Mountain, the Tyee Cup was relocated to Whistler Mountain due to low snow conditions at Grouse.
The U12 Tyee Cup race this past weekend was pretty epic in terms of relentless snowfall, volunteer resilience, and sheer grit on the part of our race organizers and volunteers. The race weekend received 30 cm of snowfall around Day 1 of the race and another 22 cm of snow before Day 2, making it a challenge to run the race, but race organizers and volunteers persevered. The heavy snow and high winds on Day 1 caused some delays to the schedule but we completed one run of the GS race for all the racers. On Day 2, the heavy snowfall continued to cause delays, but the race organizers were able to ensure that the athletes could race in a Stubby SL course in the morning and a Tall Gates SL in the afternoon.
To manage the snow conditions throughout the day, the volunteer course workers and slippers were right on the course, fixing the snow surface, immediately after a racer had skied past. This happened after almost every racer! The course crew needs a big shout-out for all the amazing work they did to make the course safe for the athletes.
After tear-down, athletes, coaches, and families headed to the Garbo Hut for a high-spirited swag toss and awards ceremony.
We appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with WMSC in hosting the Tyee Cup for this year. From gate judges and hand timers to volunteers at the starting gate and in the timing hut, a lot of volunteers are needed to run a race! A huge thank you to the race organizers, all the volunteers, coaches, and parents for helping to make the Tyee Cup happen!
